Knitting s coming back in force this year and young women are getting into it. It's fun, not very complicated in terms of the basic stitches, interesting to practice (in the evening by the fire...) and good for finger gymnastics.
Taking measurements of the model
Before creating the woolen cap, it is useful to measure the head circumference of the subject who is going to wear it. Let's take the example of a baby whose head circumference measures 44cm. The number of stitches depends on the thickness of the wool. In principle, the ball of wool is surrounded by a label indicating the equivalences. A square is usually represented and indicates horizontally the number of stitches corresponding to 10cm, and vertically the number of rows per 10cm; this in relation to the size of the needles also indicated. These data are more or less variable depending on the way we knit (loose or tight).
Bonnet knitting method
In our example, we will knit a wool into needles No. 4. We will build the hat in 2 identical pieces that we will have to sew together at the end. This is an example of easy knitting for beginners. It is also quite possible to make a seamless hat using circular needles, but this will be the subject of another post. So we'll need 34 stitches (for half of the hat). On this model, the chosen stitch is: 2 x 2 ribs. From the first row, knit 2 stitches right side up, followed by 2 stitches upside down, then 2 stitches right side up and so on. In the second row, knit the stitches as they are, i.e. the stitches knitted on the right side of the previous row must be knitted inside out. And this, over 18cm of work height. From then on, we have to start the diminutions. On each new row, decrease 1 stitch at each end. The easiest way to do this is to knit together the 2 stitches at the beginning and end of the row. This will give the point shape. Stop when there are 6 stitches left. Finish the hat by dropping the remaining 6 stitches. Sew the 2 pieces together on their sides. Sew a lapel at the bottom, to give style. You can embellish this woolen hat with a pompom or any other fantasy.
